Overview
Explore two of Peru's most fascinating and unique Inca archaeological sites: the "greenhouses" of the Incas at Moray, where impressive, deep amphitheater-like terraces spiral in agricultural splendor, and the Salt Mines of Maras, where you can observe salt streams naturally evaporating under the sun, to be harvested by local farmers as they have for centuries.
- DAY 1 | Cusco – Moray – Salt Mine – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes
- DAY 2 | Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
Day 1 | Cusco – Moray – Salt Mine – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes.
We'll pick you up from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley, navigating through winding roads that build excitement as we approach the breathtaking Inca site of Moray, also known as "The Greenhouses of the Incas," a truly unique and captivating place.
The terraces, carved into a vast bowl—part of which was further dug out by the Incas—display varying microclimates depending on their depth. It is believed that the Incas used these terraces to determine the ideal conditions for growing their crops.
With a boost of positive energy and an open mind, you'll be ready to explore the charming colonial town of Maras and the ancient Pre-Inca Salt Mine (Salineras). For centuries, thousands of salt pans have been used for salt extraction, dating back to before Inca times.
A hot spring at the valley's top releases a small stream of highly saline water, which is channeled into salt pans and evaporated to produce salt used for cattle licks.
To continue your journey of discovery, we head to the picturesque Ollantaytambo, where you'll walk along cobblestone streets to explore the impressive Inca ruins with our guide.
To prepare for the legendary Machu Picchu, we board a train to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, a hotel representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel for the night.
Day 2 | Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
Filled with excitement on your final extraordinary day, we take the 5:30 a.m. bus to the Machu Picchu archaeological site. We'll explore every corner of this New Seven Wonders of the World and UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, making it an unforgettable experience.
Your guide will lead you through the vibrant ruins and its various main streets. Afterwards, you can explore the town squares of this spiritual center on your own, climb the intricately carved stone stairways, or simply sit and find inner peace in the moment.
If you wish, you can also choose to engage in additional activities on your own (not included in the price).
- Climb Huayna Picchu and admire the stunning beauty and grandeur of Machu Picchu.
- You will have some time to walk to the Sun Gate or Inti Punku.
- Other optional activities in Aguas Calientes include visiting the new local museum or relaxing in the hot springs.
You will descend to Aguas Calientes and later board the train at 4:22 p.m. for the journey back to Cusco, with a stop at Ollantaytambo Station before being driven to your hotel.
Optional: If you wish to spend an additional day at Machu Picchu, please inform us so we can adjust the date on your return train ticket to Cusco. ITEP Eco Travel can arrange a guide and hotel for the extra day at an additional cost. Please note that you will need to purchase a second entrance ticket to Machu Picchu.
