Overview
The hike to the Choquequirao Tour and Machu Picchu complex is an extraordinary experience experience and one of the most sought after trips in the Cusco area. No wonder, as it is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes with picturesque valleys, towering snow-capped mountains and an incredible diversity of flora and fauna.
Located in the Salkantay mountain range, more than 3030 meters above sea level, the complex is surrounded by the Apus, or mountain gods, such as Yamana, Ampay, Chokecarpu, Pumasiyo and Panta, on the left bank of the Apurímac river . . During the Inca era, everything was interconnected and communicated with Machu Picchu through an elaborate and complex network of trails.
Here, visitors can explore a complex hydraulic system that most likely had domestic, ceremonial, and agricultural uses. The geographical location of Choquequirao in relation to other religious centers of the same period suggests that its purpose was to serve as an Inca enclave towards the valleys of the Apurímac river.
A Choquequirao Tour allows travelers to discover numerous similarities between Choquequirao and Machu Picchu. The purpose of the Camino to Choquequirao and Machu Picchu was eminently religious and ceremonial, a pilgrimage that included rituals to venerate the mountains and peaks along the route, such as the sacred mountain of Salkantay.
